Durante la guerra di secessione americana, una banda di confederati si prepara a rubare un carico d'oro appartenente all'unione. Durante il tragitto l'oro viene caricato su di un treno, nelle ultime miglia il convoglio viene assaltato dai confederati che fanno uscire i soldati nordisti dal convoglio in corsa. Il colonnello nordista Cord McNelly, responsabile del trasporto, giunge sul posto e vede morire il tenente a capo del convoglio, che aveva visto crescere. Deciso a catturare i ladri si getta all'inseguimento separandosi dai suoi uomini che seguono altre piste. Nel pomeriggio riesce a raggiungere il capitano Cordona responsabile dell'assalto ma viene disarcionato da cavallo e fatto prigioniero dal vice comandante il sergente Tuscarola. Nella notte una volta ripresosi si mette in marcia ma con un trucco riesce a far cadere i confederati in una trappola conducendoli ad un accampamento nordista....

Un giorno, in un gruppo di reclute giunte per l'addestramento, arriva anche Jefferson Yorke, il figlio del colonnello. Il padre non lo vede da 15 anni e cioè da quando si è lasciato con la moglie, a seguito di un incidente di guerra: egli, allora capitano dei nordisti, per ordini superiori aveva dato fuoco a delle fattorie sudiste, compresa quella della famiglia di lei che da allora non aveva più voluto avere alcun rapporto con lui, tenendosi il figlio....



During the final days of the American Civil War, the Union army payroll train is hijacked by Confederates led by Capt. Pierre Cordona and Sgt. Tuscarora Phillips. Their scheme suggests that the Confederates must have gotten detailed inside information about the transport. Col. Cord McNally's close friend, Lt. Ned Forsythe, is fatally injured in the raid, and during the pursuit McNally's squad is spread thinner and thinner until he is left on his own. After Cordona and his men capture him, McNally tricks them by leading them into a Union camp and raising the alarm. Cordona and Tuscarora are captured, but will not reveal to McNally the identity of the traitor who sold them the information about the train....
