Gerard, un meccanico di città stanco di essere usato dall'infedele moglie e dal resto della famiglia, scappa di casa e si rifugia in un pacifico villaggio della campagna francese per cominciare una nuova vita. Accolto sin da subito a braccia aperte dai compaesani, prende in affitto una stanza nell'antica locanda gestita dall'eccentrica e amorevole Barbara. Affascinato dalla sua bellezza e incuriosito dal suo strano comportamento, Gerard riesce pian piano a conquistarla.
