Scott McCall è uno studente,per niente popolare, della Beacon Hills High School e "gioca" nella squadra di Lacrosse della sua scuola, con il numero 11 sulla maglia. La sua vita cambia drasticamente quando, una notte, viene morso da un lupo mannaro e lo diventa a sua volta. Da questo momento, Scott è costretto a ricercare un equilibrio tra la sua nuova identità e la sua vita da adolescente. In questo viene aiutato dal suo migliore amico, Stiles, e da un misterioso licantropo, Derek Hale. Grazie alle sue nuove doti, conquista il ruolo di capitano della squadra di Lacrosse, scatenando la rabbia e la gelosia di Jackson, fino ad allora capitano. Quando Scott s'innamora di Allison Argent, scopre che la famiglia della ragazza caccia i licantropi da secoli (da lì il cognome Argent, in francese "argento",materiale usato per uccidere i Licantropi). I due decidono di stare comunque insieme ma Scott si alleerà poi con Derek per sfuggire agli Argent, e in particolare a Kate, zia di Allison ed ex fidanzata di Derek. I due hanno inoltre intenzione di scoprire chi è il misterioso alfa, il licantropo che ha morso Scott e che ha ucciso l’alfa Laura, sorella di Derek, per diventarlo al suo posto. Peter Hale, zio di Derek, di Cora e di Laura (assassinata), rimasto in stato catatonico per anni in seguito ad un incendio nella sua abitazione, si risveglia rivelando che è lui il licantropo alfa, e cerca di radunare il suo branco formato da Scott e Derek mordendo in seguito Lydia Martin, un'amica di Allison e di cui Stiles è perdutamente innamorato dalla terza elementare, la sera del ballo d'inverno. Nel frattempo Allison scopre la vera natura di Scott; insieme alla zia si apprestano in una battuta di caccia vicino a casa di Derek, e lì quest'ultimo viene colpito dalle frecce scagliate da Allison, spinta dalla cattiva zia Kate, la quale a sua volta spara a Derek e minaccia di uccidere Scott. A fermarla è il padre di Allison che le fa confessare che l'incendio, in cui era morta la famiglia di Derek, era stato causato da lei: in quel momento Kate viene rapita da Peter che la uccide squarciandole la gola davanti ad Allison. Quest'ultima viene minacciata da Peter, ma per proteggerla entreranno in gioco Scott e Derek. Dopo una breve battaglia, i due licantropi beta riescono a portare fuori l'alfa; una volta fuori dall'abitazione il corpo dello zio viene bruciato da Jackson e Stiles tramite delle bombe chimiche costruite dall'intelligentissima Lydia. Infine Peter finisce a terra e Derek gli squarcia la gola, uccidendolo e diventando l'alfa. La sua prima azione come tale è donare il morso a Jackson, che lo bramava dall'inizio della stagione, quando Scott è stato trasformato.
