La superiora del monastero di Salisburgo, per mettere alla prova la discussa vocazione d'una postulante, Maria, persuade la ragazza a passare un periodo di tempo in casa della famiglia Von Trapp, in qualità di governante. Von Trapp (un ufficiale di marina, vedovo, ma ancora giovane) ha uno stuolo di figlioli ai quali, non sapendo come comportarsi, impone una disciplina militaresca. Maria, con il suo carattere cordialissimo ed impulsivo, s'accattiva ben presto la simpatia dei ragazzi e, senza accorgersene, s'innamora del padre. A renderla consapevole di tale sentimento è la baronessa Schraeder, la donna che Von Trapp intende sposare. Turbata, Maria si rifugia di nuovo fra le mura del convento. Ma di nuovo viene esortata ad affrontare e risolvere il suo problema. In verità, anche il capitano è innamorato della ragazza e la baronessa, accortasi d'aver perduto la partita sentimentale, si ritira in buon ordine. Von Trapp e Maria sono sposati da poco quando i nazisti occupano l'Austria. Da buon patriota, Von Trapp rifiuta di porsi ai loro ordini e perciò, a rischio della vita, valica il confine svizzero insieme a Maria ed ai suoi figlioli.
