Il capitano Jean-Luc Picard è molto preoccupato: il tenente Data, in preda ad un attacco di follia, ha preso in ostaggio il team scientifico che effettuava un'ispezione sul popolo del Bàku per conto della Federazione. Il tentativo di salvare Data conduce Picard sul pianeta abitato dai Bàku, popolo composto da 600 individui che vivono in un unico villaggio e in un isolamento quasi totale. I Bàku hanno la caratteristica di vivere a lungo, anche centinaia di anni. L'ispezione della Federazione e dei suoi alleati Son'a è in realtà solo una copertura per rapire i Bàku ed esiliarli dalla loro terra. L'obiettivo è quello di fare in modo che anche altri possano vivere su quel pianeta avvolto da radiazioni metafisiche che impediscono l'invecchiamento. Per impedire questa violenza, Picard si rivolge all'ammiraglio Dogherty ma scopre amaramente che anche lui fa parte del piano. L'aspetto etico della faccenda sembra non interessare, e Picard viene invitato a non interessarsene. Ma Picard pensa che in questa occasione sia giusto ribellarsi al superiore. Seguito dai suoi fedelissimi, progetta un manovra diversiva. Messi infine l'uno di fronte all'altro, i popoli Son'a e Bàku si scoprono tra loro legati e interdipendenti. Ruafu, il capo dei Son'a, da giovane era un Bàku ed ora voleva prendersi una rivincita personale. Picard riporta la tranquillità sull'indifeso pianeta Bàku e l'Enterprise può riprendere a volare negli spazi.
