Due pianeti dell'Universo simili alla Terra. Uno in posizione opposta all'altro tanto da fargli sostituto della volta stellata. Ognuno con la propria forza di gravità e con un'enorme colonna (opera della Transworld società impegnata nello sfruttare le risorse del pianeta che sta sotto) che li collega. Nessun abitante dei due mondi può incontrare direttamente chi vive nell'altro e ogni oggetto che proviene da uno dei due mondi, dopo una brevissima presenza nell'altro, inizia a essere sottoposto a un processo di combustione. Il giovane Adam, che vive nel disastrato pianeta di sotto, un giorno si reca in un luogo proibito situato in prossimità dell'abitazione della zia Becky. Là incontra (ovviamente a testa in giù) la coetanea Eden. Il passo dall'amicizia all'amore proibito è breve. Finché un giorno i due vengono scoperti e nella concitazione, Eden cade battendo la testa. Adam si convince che sia morta finché un giorno molti anni dopo...
