Paleontologo di fama mondiale, il dottor Alan Grant aveva accettato con estremo scetticismo, otto anni fa, l'invito dell'industriale John Hammond. nella speranza di poter contare sull'appoggio dello scienziato, Hammond aveva presentato in anteprima a lui e ai suoi colleghi l'ultima trovata della InGen, la sua società: un'attrazione turistica unica nel suo genere, situata sulla remota Isla Nublar, al largo del Costa Rica. Come mai era successo prima di allora, il Jurassic Park consentiva ai visitatori di interagire con dei veri dinosauri riprodotti geneticamente. Ma per gli accompagnatori al seguito di Hammond in quel viaggio fatale, l'esperienza si è ben presto tramutata in un terrificante incubo non appena i Velociraptor, i T-Rex e le altre creature preistoriche clonate dalla InGen hanno iniziato a rivendicare il parco come loro territorio. Scampando alla morte per miracolo, Grant aveva deciso di lasciarsi alle spalle l'increscioso evento ma, benchè scosso dalla tremenda esperienza, il suo impegno nello studio sui dinosauri era rimasto assolutamente immutato. Otto anni dopo, il disastro della InGen e il pessimo clima politico ed economico hanno ormai affossato le ricerche sui dinosauri, tanto più che i finanziamenti sia pubblci che privati si sono pressochè azzerati.
