In seguito alla morte di Boromir ed al salto nell'antro di Khazad-dûm, la Compagnia è costretta a dividersi in tre gruppi. Nonostante siano dispersi i membri della originaria Compagnia non sono meno determinati nella propria eroica ricerca. Tra le colline di Emyn Muil Frodo e Sam si sono persi. Scoprono di essere seguiti dal misterioso Gollum. Gollum promette di guidare gli Hobbit alle Oscure Porte di Mordor se questi lo lasceranno libero. Nonostante Sam non si fidi del nuovo compagno, Frodo prova compassione nei suoi confronti di Gollum perché, come lui, un tempo è stato Portatore dell'Anello.
