BIOGRAFIA
Prima della loro esplosione, avvenuta alla fine degli anni Sessanta, i californiani Creedence Clearwater Revival o, più semplicemente, Creedence o CCR, erano un trio di blues-revival nato a El Cerrito, nei pressi di San Francisco, composto dai tre compagni di scuola - classe 1945 - John Fogerty (chitarrista), Stu Cook (al pianoforte), Doug Clifford (batterista). Questo terzetto (nome originario: The Blue Velvets), per il primissimo periodo, ebbe un carattere prettamente strumentale. Solo all’inizio degli anni Sessanta, infatti, ai tre componenti, si aggiunse la voce Tom Fogerty, fratello maggiore di John (di quattro anni) e già idolo locale, per le sue esperienze come cantante in varie band della San Francisco’s Bayou. Nella prima metà degli anni Sessanta, The Blue Velvets avevano pubblicato alcuni brani per la Oakland Orchestra Records, che non avevano raggiunto risultati di mercato particolarmente incoraggianti. Fu in seguito a quest\'esperienza che i quattro ragazzi variarono leggermente la line-up, affiancando alla chitarra solista di John Fogerty, una seconda chitarra (suonata dal fratello Tommy) e spostando Stuart \'Stu\' Cook dal pianoforte al basso. La ricerca di un nuovo sound era appena cominciata.
Nel 1964, sotto il nome di The Visions, cominciò la loro nuova collaborazione con la Fantasy Records di San Francisco, che in quel periodo, aveva appena lanciato sulla scena nazionale il jazzista californiano Vince Guaraldi. Al momento di pubblicare i primi singoli, però, il nome della band venne mutato in The Golliwogs, con riferimento a Golliwogg, un pupazzo-menestrello di un libro per bambini. Dei sette singoli realizzati dalla band in questi anni, si segnalò Brown-eyed girl, discreta prova r&b intrisa di un sound piuttosto “roots”. Fu in questo periodo che a prendere le redini del gruppo fu il minore dei Fogerty, che cominciò a scrivere tutti i brani e a divenire la vera anima del gruppo, che, così, mutò profondamente i suoi piani di ricerca musicale.
Alla fine del 1967, The Golliwogs cambiarono definitivamente nome in Creedence Clearwater Revival, e alla metà dell’anno successivo, pubblicarono il loro primo album, che riportava il nome della band. Il disco (500.000 mila copie vendute) non smentiva il profilo blues-revival di cui i quattro avevano sempre fatto un segno distintivo: memorabili le cover di I put a spell on you (primo singolo della band), Ninety-nine and a half (Won’t do) di Wilson Pickett e la celeberrima versione di Suzie Q, firmata Dale Hawkins, ed interpretata con un cipiglio quasi “hendrixiano”. L’album entrò in classifica al 52° posto.
L’affrancamento dei CCR dal filone blues passò innanzitutto per Bayou Country, il loro secondo lavoro: il sound cominciò ad ammorbidirsi, modellandosi sul country tradizionale della West Coast. Il brano Born on the Bayou fu la esemplificazione di questa nuova sensibilità di John Fogerty, autore, fino al 1970, di tutti i testi e le musiche della band (esclusi i pezzi di revival, ovviamente). Bayou Country, oltre che per il suo piazzamento al 7° posto in classifica, si ricorda soprattutto per aver dato i natali al primo grande successo della band: la hit Proud Mary, 2° in classifica, proiettata ormai sulle strade del country-rock. Dopo pochi mesi fu la volta di Green river (1° in classifica), compatto album dalla duplice natura: rock e folk. L’album piazzò due brani nella Top10 (Green river e Bad moon rising), entrambi al 2° posto. In estate i CCR parteciparono al Woodstock Festival of Art and Culture. Furono, peraltro, i primi artisti ad esser contattati per parteciparvi. La loro performance, tuttavia, non trova spazio nel film/documentario che ricorda la tre giorni di rock più importante di quel periodo, perché ritenuta “sotto tono” dagli stessi CCR. Alla fine del 1969, il loro anno più prolifico, arrivò anche il concept-album Willy and the Poorboys (3° in classifica e 1.000.000 di copie vendute), il primo vero disco in stile Creedence, che proponeva, tra le altre, le hit Down on the corner e Fortunate son, quest’ultima divenuta, poi, un brano fisso nel repertorio dei Pearl Jam.
Con tre album sfornati in meno di un anno (1.000.000 di copie vendute a testa) e una tournée europea di cui resta famoso il concerto alla Royal Albert Hall di Londra, i Creedence arrivarono alla definitiva consacrazione mondiale nel 1970, con il disco Cosmo’s Factory, che piazzò sei singoli nella Top5. Cosmo’s Factory, con le sue 3.000.000 di copie vendute e con la sua 1° posizione in classifica, fu l’album più lungo e ricco di capolavori della band, da Up around the bend a Who’ll stop the rain, alla lunga cover di I heard it through the Grapevine di Marvin Gaye, fino a Travelin’ band. Con Pendulum, edito in dicembre, s’interruppe, stranamente, la tradizione che voleva in ogni album dei CCR almeno un brano di revival presente. In quest’album, John Fogerty esaltò la sua vena compositiva spaziando dal pop al funky e sfornando l’ultimo classico della band, Have you ever seen the rain. Per il resto, l’album fu riguardato dalla critica come un passo falso nel percorso dei Creedence, che, subito dopo la fine delle registrazioni, persero Tom (in cerca di fortuna da solista) e rimasero in silenzio fino al 1972. La band, tuttavia, rimase in auge per tutto il 1971, grazie alla pubblicazione del libro Creedence inside e ai postumi di Cosmo\'s factory.
Il tentativo di “democraticizzare” la band attuato da John Fogerty in quello che fu l’ultimo disco dei CCR si basò sulla ferrea volontà di dar voce in maniera equa alla vena compositiva di tutti i componenti della band. C\'è chi ha visto in questo comportamento di John, la volontà di mandare definitivamente a rotoli l\'intero gruppo. Infatti, dei 10 brani che compongono il disco Mardi Gras, 3 sono scritti da ciascuno dei superstiti (che sembrarono definitivamente prosciugati nelle idee e nella brillantezza, nonostante qualche brano abbastanza apprezzato dal pubblico - Sweet-hitch hiker e Door to door su tutti); il decimo brano, invece, è la cover del classico Hello Mary Lou. Ad ottobre, i Creedence si sciolsero. Si ricomposero solo in un’occasione: nel 1980, per la ricorrenza del matrimonio di Tom.
