The Sims 2

Some say that the ultimate fun is supreme control: control over a dog and its ability to fetch beer from the refrigerator, or maybe control over an opponent in a game of chess. Some like the thrill of piloting a jet and soaring through the clouds at Mach 3. If Shakespeare has taught us anything it's that the purest and most gratifying form of control is that which we exert over our fellow beings, through both words and deeds. With a few well-placed lies and a murder or five, Lord MacBeth became King, albeit briefly. Romeo and Juliet taught us the power of angst-filled wooing and the lengths to which such words can drive a pair of star-crossed lovers. However, most people aren't really keen on engaging in the enterprises of lying and murder just to see what happens. Heck, some people are afraid to say hi to the hot girl who doles out precious caffeine at their local Starbucks. Some people want to own a four story house and work as a mad scientist, but maybe lack the time and means to do so. Yet what if there were a game that could allow one to manipulate the lives of digital people, thus experiencing the highs, lows, and otherwise bizarre aspects of real life, without all the pesky real life side effects?

As it turns out, there is such a game! Thanks to the folks at Aspyr Media, The Sims 2 (TS2) has made its way to Mac OS X. The Sims 2 is the sequel to The Sims, a game that broke all sales records and spawned an extensive seven expansion packs. Quite often a sequel fails to capture the greatness of its predecessor. It's difficult to evoke the magic of the original game, while making enough changes to keep things interesting. It's possible, but it is indeed a tricksy endeavor. So how does The Sims 2 live up to the game which was an industry leading bestseller? The best way to find out is to read on as I detail this hotly anticipated sequel.

Graphics: Sim Life in 3D
Visually, The Sims 2 is excellent and a big upgrade from its predecessor. For instance, players have a truly 3D view of the world. Players can freely zoom in and out on their Sims and rotate the camera a full 360º. In the original, players could only zoom and rotate the camera in steps. The Sims themselves are also richly detailed 3D models, complete with nicely rendered facial expressions. Funky Sims in particular get their freak on with fluidity when dancing the night away. The Sims also bask in dynamic lighting. Furthermore, TS2 boasts window-mode support, allowing players to multitask even as their Sims go about their business. One can fire off email while their Sim practices yoga.

The game ran well on my Dual 2 GHz G5 with an ATI Radeon X800 at maximum visual detail, but there were some slow downs when there were four or more Sims frolicking under multiple light sources in crowded homes with lots of objects, though it was never severe enough for me to dial back the detail. However, I definitely see how this game could easily bring any low-end G4 Mac to its proverbial knees. Aspyr isn't joking with the minimum system requirements, so follow them.

Sound: Sim Sound in a Sim World
Aurally, The Sims 2 is very good. Granted, it's nothing absolutely stunning, as it's really just the rainbow sprinkles on a cup of frogurt. The Sims' voices are crisp as they speak in their unique Sim language, which is a kind of gibberish. I was actually really impressed with TS2's in-game music, particularly that which resonates from the Sims' stereo equipment. Sims love to party and they loooove to dance, so it's always a good idea to purchase some sort of sound system. Whenever a Sim operates such a device, they have a choice of musical genres to enjoy from hip-hop to salsa, with multiple songs per genre. It's hilarious to hear rap in the Sims' native tongue. All in all, I was quite pleased with The Sims 2's soundscape.

Conclusion: Simtastic
The Sims 2 is an excellent sequel to a truly unique game. It adds more than enough new features, yet doesn't tamper with what we loved in the original. Sims fans definitely have reason to rejoice; The Sims 2 is flat out awesome.

Ora puoi costruire ponti, attici, fondamenta e tre storie.
