Durante la Prima guerra mondiale, Tomas rimane ferito gravemente in seguito all’esplosione di una granata. Creduto morto, viene gettato in una fossa comune ma si risveglia in tempo per essere salvato. Qualche tempo dopo, in piena influenza spagnola, fotografa i morti con i parenti, un lavoro che gli permette di vivere più che bene. Dopo l'incontro con la piccola orfana Anna, accetta la proposta di fotografare i morti di un piccolo villaggio, la cui sepoltura deve attendere il disgelo primaverile.
