Ogni mattina Ty Hackett (Columbus Short) sveglia suo fratello minore Jimmy e gli dice di prepararsi per la scuola. I loro genitori sono recentemente morti e li hanno lasciati con un'ipoteca sulla casa. Ty è un reduce di guerra ed è tornato da poco dall'Iraq, guadagnandosi una stella d'argento. Si è portato dietro l'orrore del conflitto ed è molto pressato dalla situazione che sta vivendo: deve prendersi cura del fratello, che rischia di essergli sottratto dai servizi sociali.
Sebbene abbia trovato lavoro come guardia di sicurezza nel trasporto di valori su blindati grazie all'amico Mike (Matt Dillon), la paga è veramente troppo bassa per permettergli di provvedere a tutto. Con lui fanno squadra Baines (Laurence Fishburne), Quinn, Palmer (Amaury Nolasco) e Dobbs. Da tempo gli uomini hanno realizzato quanto denaro passi sotto i loro occhi ogni giorno: tanti soldi che potrebbero risolvere definitivamente ogni loro problema. Conoscendo le difficoltà di Ty, cercano di trascinarlo in un progetto che hanno in mente da un po': Mike gli propone di partecipare a un furto ai danni della compagnia per la quale lavorano, al blindato a loro affidato, sottraendo 42 milioni di dollari, nascondendoli e simulando la rapina.
Il piano sembra ben studiato, gli uomini sono sicuri di riuscire nell'impresa senza spargimento di sangue. Ty da principio è assolutamente contrario, non vuole rischiare, pensa a sua fratello Jimmy, ma si lascia convincere. Tutto è concordato e sembra filare liscio, ma basta poco per trasformare quella perfetta rapina in un disastro...
