Nel 1942 il gen. Douglas Mac Arthur si trova a mal partito nelle Filippine. Deciso a difenderle ad oltranza, riceve l'ordine dal Presidente Franklin D. Roosvelt di spostarsi in Australia; quindi, ceduto il comando a Wainwright, da Corregidor si reca a Melbourne con una fragile cacciatorpediniera, dimostrando la violabilità del blocco nipponico. Comunque, cadute le Filippine per carenza assoluta di viveri e di munizioni, quale Comandante Supremo del Sud-Ovest del Pacifico, Mac Arthur inizia la lenta, ardita e valida azione che lo riporta vittorioso nelle Filippine il 20 ottobre 1944 e, nel '45, a Tokio dopo le bombe di Nagasaki e di Iroshima. Sempre in disaccordo con lo Stato Maggiore e, soprattutto, con il nuovo Presidente degli States, Truman, il generale si prodiga per la riorganizzazione morale, economica e democratica del Giappone. Nel giugno del 1950 si trova costretto ad accorrere in Corea dopo che i rivoluzionari del Nord hanno passato il 38^ parallelo. La reazione tattica di MacArthur ancora una volta ottiene un successo militare, ma la sua avanzata non collima con le titubanti scelte di Truman che teme lo scontro frontale con la Cina e Russia. Nell'aprile del 1951 il generale viene sostituito e torna in Patria accolto trionfalmente dalla popolazione.
