"Il mio cognome è Salmon, come il pesce, il mio nome Susie.. avevo 14 anni quando mi hanno assassinata, il 6 dicembre 1973" Quel giorno Jack e Abigail Salmon (Mark Wahlberg e Rachel Weisz), i genitori di Susie (Saoirse Ronan), aspettano a casa il ritorno della figlia e passate troppe ore, preoccupati chiamano la polizia. Passano i giorni ma Susie non torna.
La ragazza, nel frattempo, è intrappolata in un mondo "intermedio" tra cielo e Terra.
Da lì, Susie veglia sui suoi cari ed il suo assassino, incapace di mollare nonostante l'esortazione della sua nuova amica dell'aldilà, Holly . Nel mondo reale nel frattempo iniziano le indagini da parte del padre Jack e dalla sorella Lindsey che vogliono dare una spiegazione a questo dolore infinito. Susie, viene accolta dalle altre vittime del suo carnefice e l'aldilà inizia ad espandersi in un paradiso più grande.
