Tom Waits ha detto: "Mi piace una bella canzone che ti dice cose terribili. A tutti noi piacciono le cattive notizie da una bella bocca". Quando si tratta del materiale su Blood Money, non so se posso chiamare bella la bocca di Waits, ma sicuramente offre molte cattive notizie in un modo molto attraente e avvincente. Pubblicato contemporaneamente ad Alice, una registrazione di canzoni scritte nel 1990, Blood Money è un insieme di 13 canzoni scritte da Waits e Kathleen Brennan in collaborazione con il drammaturgo Robert Wilson. Il progetto era un ampio adattamento dell'opera teatrale Woyzeck, originariamente scritta dal poeta tedesco Georg Buchner nel 1837.
