In questo film, Stanlio e Ollio sono custodi di un'agenzia investigativa. Una sera, un importante inventore, Alva P.Hartley, che dice di aver creato una bomba distruttiva da fornire alle industrie belliche americane che lui chiama "Il Grande Botto", riceve una chiamata dal dipartimento della guerra che lo informa del loro interessamento per la sua invenzione. L'accordo è quello di recarsi il prima possibile a Washington con lo scopo di brevettare l'invenzione. Temendo di avere alle costole delle spie interessati alla bomba, Hartley decide di ingaggiare due detective in grado di custodire la bomba.
