Herbie Hancock sarà sempre una delle figure più venerate e controverse del jazz, proprio come lo era il suo datore di lavoro/mentore Miles Davis quando era in vita. A differenza di Miles, che è andato avanti senza sosta e non ha mai guardato indietro fino alla fine, Hancock ha intrapreso un percorso a zig zag in avanti, facendo la spola tra quasi tutti gli sviluppi del jazz elettronico e acustico e dell'R&B nell'ultimo terzo del 20° secolo e nel 21°.
