Semplicemente uno dei più grandi chitarristi della storia del jazz, George Benson è un musicista straordinariamente versatile, le cui abilità abili lo trovano a incrociare facilmente tra jazz diretto, smooth jazz e R&B contemporaneo. Dotato di un gusto supremo, un suono di chitarra bello e rotondo, una velocità eccezionale, un meraviglioso senso della logica nella creazione di assoli e, come sempre, un'irrefrenabile voglia di swing, le ispirazioni di Benson potrebbero essere state Charlie Christian e Wes Montgomery, ma il suo stile è completamente suo. Non solo può suonare brillantemente come solista, è anche uno dei migliori chitarristi ritmici in circolazione, solidale con i solisti e un pericoloso swinger, in particolare in un formato soul-jazz; abilità per le quali ha attirato l'attenzione per la prima volta come membro della band del fratello Jack McDuff nei primi anni '60.
