Il 15 settembre 1957, John Coltrane entrava nel salotto / studio di registrazione di Rudy Van Gelder a Hackensack, nel New Jersey, per registrare il suo primo grande capolavoro: Blue Train, destinato a rimanere lansi:{2019}unico titolo del leggendario sassofonista come leader per Blue Note, un album di cinque tracce lanciato dal roccioso blues che dava il titolo al disco. La band era da sogno: un giovane e scatenato Lee Morgan alla tromba, Curtis Fuller al trombone, Kenny Drew al pianoforte, più Paul Chambers al basso e Philly Joe Jones alla batteria (già membri del quintetto di Miles Davis in cui Coltrane militava).
