Paradiso Amaro, il film diretto da Alexander Payne, è ambientato nella paradisiaca cornice delle Hawaii, e si concentra sulle vicissitudini che ruotano intorno all'avvocato Matt King (George Clooney), discendente di una facoltosa famiglia. Quando un incidente in barca condanna sua moglie, Elizabeth, ad uno stato di coma irreversibile, Matt rimane solo con le due figlie, la piccola Scottie (Amara Miller), e la diciassettenne Alex (Shailene Woodley). Questa situazione obbliga Matt a fare i conti con il ruolo di genitore e tutto ciò che da questo deriva, compresa la responsabilità di arginare i comportamenti autodistruttivi della figlia adolescente e quelli impertinenti della più piccola. Lo sventurato avvocato deve al contempo risolvere un altro problema: come amministratore fiduciario di 25,000 acri situati sull'Isola di Kauai, Matt deve decidere se tenere la terra incontaminata a cui le sue figlie sono molto legate o venderla, in modo da accontentare l'armata dei suoi cugini nonché comproprietari, tra cui spicca il carismatico cugino Hugh (Beau Bridges).
La vita del protagonista si complica ulteriormente quando viene a conoscenza, da una fonte inaspettata, che sua moglie aveva una relazione. In seguito a questa scoperta decide di andare alla ricerca dell'amante della moglie, intraprendendo un viaggio insieme alle due figlie che rappresenterà il punto di inizio per la ricostruzione della sua vita e quella della sua famiglia. Di ritorno dal viaggio Matt dovrà prendere due decisioni che cambieranno per sempre la sua vita e quella di chi gli sta attorno: se staccare la spina ad Elizabeth e iniziare un nuovo capitolo della sua vita; se cedere il terreno e condannare l'isola alla cementificazione o mantenere vergini quelle terre.
