Lo status di Barbra Streisand come una delle cantanti di maggior successo della sua generazione è tanto più notevole non solo perché la sua popolarità è stata raggiunta di fronte a una tendenza musicale dominante - il rock & roll - che non ha seguito; ma anche perché, nonostante una straordinaria voce canora che ha affascinato praticamente chiunque l'abbia ascoltata, ha sempre usato il canto come un semplice trampolino di lancio per altre carriere, come attrice teatrale e cinematografica e come regista. Streisand ha lottato brevemente come attrice e cantante di nightclub a New York all'inizio degli anni '60 prima di ottenere la sua prima parte in uno spettacolo di Broadway, I Can Get It for You Wholesale, nel 1962. L'album del cast per quello spettacolo e una successiva apparizione in un il revival in studio di Pins and Needles furono le sue prime registrazioni.
