La storia si svolge in Australia nel 1939 alla vigilia della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, quando la nobildonna Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) parte dall’Inghilterra per convincere il marito Maitland Ashley a vendere la loro tenuta Faraway Downs a Leslie “King” Carney (Brian Brown).
A Darwin l’aspetta il mandriano Drover (Hugh Jackman), un amico del marito che ha il compito di accompagnarla alla tenuta. Quando Sarah arriva alla proprietà, scopre che suo marito è stato ucciso e Neil Fletcher (David Wenham), amministratore della tenuta, accusa dell’omicidio uno stregone aborigeno. La sera stessa Sarah conosce Nullah, un dolcissimo bambino, figlio di Daisy, la domestica di Faraway Downs.
Insieme a Nullah, Drover e i suoi uomini, Sarah affronta un’avventura attraverso il deserto per trasportare il bestiame come suo marito aveva progettato. Questo scatena le ire di King Carney, che farà di tutto per vendicarsi dell’offesa subita.
Arriva la tanto desiderata stagione delle piogge, tutto si risveglia e prende vita e anche Faraway Downs rinasce sotto la guida di Sarah e di Drover. Ma il destino incombe su di loro e dovranno accadere ancora tante cose prima che la pace e la serenità possano essere durature...
