Reminiscence, film diretto da Lisa Joy, è ambientato in un futuro distopico, nel quale il nostro pianeta è divenuto ormai un enorme oceano a causa del riscaldamento globale. Le acque, infatti, hanno sommerso tutte le terre emerse e le città sono allagate. La popolazione di Miami vive e lavora di notte, in completa oscurità, riposandosi di giorno. Tra loro c'è lo scienziato e investigatore privato Nick Bannister (Hugh Jackman), che mediante l'uso di una specifica tecnologia riesce a scavare nella memoria delle persone, così da riportare a galla determinati ricordi e aiutarle a risolvere i loro problemi odierni.
Un giorno bussa alla sua porta una donna tanto affascinante quanto misteriosa, Mae (Rebecca Ferguson), desiderosa di scandagliare il proprio passato per ritrovare un oggetto perduto. Nick s'innamora subito di lei, ma quando prova a rintracciarla, la donna sembra sparita nel nulla. È così che decide di indagare sulla sua scomparsa, ma non immagina di certo che le sue ricerche lo porteranno a scoprire una cospirazione violenta. Ora che è a conoscenza di questo intrigo, Bannister ha solo una scelta da fare: spingersi oltre, pur di scoprire cosa è successo all'amata Mae, o tornare sui suoi passi.
