Jack Wilder (Dave Franco) è un prestigiatore di strada che truffa gli ignari volontari, Merrit McKinney (Woody Harrelson) un mentalista che punta spettatori dalla facile suggestione, Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher) è un'esperta escapologa, nonché ex assistente di Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), mago delle carte e incallito seduttore: quattro maghi che vengono spiati per mesi da un personaggio incappucciato e misterioso, il quale farà in modo che ognuno di loro riceva una delle carte dei Tarocchi; queste li condurranno ad una medesima stanza, dove troveranno le istruzioni per intricati numeri di magia. Las Vegas, un anno dopo; i nostri protagonisti, che si fanno chiamare I Quattro Maghi, sono sul palcoscenico per un prestigioso spettacolo: nel numero finale, rapinano una banca di Parigi e riversano sul pubblico in visibilio il bottino di ben tre milioni di euro. Rilasciati per mancanza di prove, vengono indagati dagli agenti Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) e Alma Dray (Mélanie Laurent), incaricati dall'FBI e Interpol di investigare sull'assurdo caso, e non si daranno per vinti finché non avranno scoperto il trucco.
