Candyman, film diretto da Nia DaCosta, è un sequel dell'omonimo horror del 1992, ambientato come il suo precedente a Chicago nel quartiere Cabrini-Green, un tempo zona degradata della città con abitanti per lo più afroamericani e ora location "in" popolata da bianchi benestanti. Diversi anni prima la zona, durante i progetti di edilizia dei quartieri, è stata terrorizzata dalla storia di un killer soprannaturale con un gancio di ferro al posto del braccio, il Candyman, che veniva evocato se il suo nome era ripetuto 5 volte di fronte allo specchio.
Oggi a Cabrini-Green, ormai zona riqualificata, vive Anthony (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), un artista in stallo, affascinato dalla storia del Candyman, che, nonostante i timori e gli avvisi della fidanzata Brianna (Teyonah Parris), decide di scoprire se la leggenda sull'oscura presenza sia vera o falsa. Peccato che il Candyman è pronto a tornare e a cercare un nuovo corpo da usare come spirito vendicatore.
