Il destino di un cavaliere, film diretto da Brian Helgeland, racconta la storia di un umile scudiero che cerca di cambiare la propria sorte.
Quattordicesimo secolo. Dopo l’improvvisa morte del suo padrone nel bel mezzo di una giostra medievale, il servo William Thatcher (Heath Ledger) prende una decisione azzardata: indossa l’armatura del defunto cavaliere per terminare in sua vece il torneo. Grazie all'aiuto degli amici Wat (Alan Tudyk) e Roland (Mark Addy), William riesce nel suo intento, concludendo vittoriosamente la gara e aggiudicandosi il premio finale.
Al termine del campionato i due scudieri vorrebbero solo tornare a casa, ma William li convince a restare con lui per aiutarlo. Il semplice popolano è infatti determinato a cambiare il proprio destino: egli vuole gareggiare in altri tornei e diventare un vero e rispettabile cavaliere. L’incontro casuale con Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany), scrittore pieno di debiti di gioco, si rivela molto utile al proposito, in quanto redige per William una patente falsa di nobiltà, sotto il nome di Sir Ulrich Von Liechtenstein di Gelderland.
L’aspirante cavaliere può finalmente lanciarsi in un’avventura piena di emozioni, durante la quale avrà a che fare con un’affascinante principessa, Lady Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon), e un pericoloso rivale d’armi, il temibile Conte Adhemar d'Anjou (Rufus Sewell)...
