Agorà, il film diretto da Alejandro Amenabar, è ambientato ad Alessandria d'Egitto nel 391 dopo Cristo, dove la filosofa Ipazia (Rachel Weisz), ultima erede della cultura antica e forse, in quanto donna, massima espressione di una lunga evoluzione civile e di una libertà di pensiero che non si rivedrà più fino all'epoca moderna, viene travolta dalla crisi di un mondo, quello pagano, che non ha saputo ripensarsi, trovandosi così impreparato di fronte al nascere - e presto al dilagare - di movimenti religiosi sempre più fanatici e intolleranti.
Fra questi i "parabolani", la setta cristiana che arriva a distruggere la biblioteca del Serapeo, dove Ipazia lotta insieme ai suoi discepoli per salvare la saggezza del Mondo Antico.
Tra questi ultimi, due uomini in lotta per il cuore della filosofa: l'arguto e privilegiato Oreste (Oscar Isaac) e Davo (Max Minghella), il giovane schiavo di Ipazia, che è diviso tra l'amore segreto per lei e la libertà che potrebbe ottenere se si unisse alla rivolta ormai inarrestabile dei cristiani.
Con ostilità implacabile, il vescovo Cirillo attacca senza sosta "l'eretica" Ipazia, fino a condannarla a morte...
