Sul volo Chicago-Roma c'è un uomo, disperato e coperto di debiti, che intende far saltare l'aereo, così che la moglie possa riscuotere l'assicurazione sulla vita stipulata in aeroporto. Il comandante Demerest cerca di dissuaderlo e quasi ci riesce, ma un maldestro passeggero fa degenerare la trattativa e l'uomo si rinchiude nella toilette facendosi esplodere. Fortunatamente l'esplosione avviene nella coda dell'aereo, limitando così il danno alla zona posteriore. Ma la conseguente decompressione creatasi risucchia il dinamitardo fuori dall'aeroplano, una hostess rimane seriamente ferita e alcuni passeggeri accusano contusioni. L'equipaggio mantiene il sangue freddo e riesce a riportare l'aereo danneggiato a Chicago atterrando nonostante una tempesta di neve sfruttando una pista, inagibile a causa di un aereo bloccato, liberata all'ultimo istante dal personale di terra.
The Chicago area is paralyzed by a snowstorm affecting Lincoln International Airport. A Trans Global Airlines (TGA) Boeing 707 flight crew misjudge their turn from Runway 29 onto the taxiway, becoming stuck in the snow and closing that runway. Airport manager Mel Bakersfeld is forced to work overtime, causing tension with his wife, Cindy. A divorce seems imminent as he nurtures a closer relationship with a co-worker, TGA customer relations agent Tanya Livingston.
