Laura (Penelope Cruz) vive a Buenos Aires, dove è sposata con un uomo che non ama più, Alejandro (Ricardo Darín), e ha due figli. Si prepara a tornare nella sua terra d’origine, un piccolo paese in provincia di Madrid fra le vigne della Spagna rurale, in occasione delle nozze della sorella minore Ana (Imma Cuesta). Oltre a rincontrare la sua complicata famiglia, rivede Paco (Javier Bardem), suo grande amore della giovinezza che non è mai riuscita a dimenticare.
I festeggiamenti del matrimonio sembrano procedere per il meglio, finché la sera sparisce Irene, la figlia adolescente di Laura. Subito diviene chiaro che si tratta di un sequestro, quando la donna inizia a ricevere i messaggi dei rapitori che chiedono un riscatto in cambio della vita della ragazza.
La famiglia decide di non coinvolgere le forze dell'ordine, ma di affidarsi a Jorge (José Ángel Egido), un poliziotto in pensione, che viene chiamato a investigare da Fernando, il marito di Mariana, la sorella maggiore di Laura.
Immediatamente Jorge mette in allarme Laura, dicendole che deve includere nella lista dei sospetti anche alcuni membri della famiglia. Intanto interroga Alejandro, giunto dall'Argentina, evidenziando i suoi problemi economici e la dipendenza dall'alcol.
Nel frattempo Laura è alla disperata ricerca dei soldi necessari per il riscatto e chiede a Paco di vendere la sua tenuta, confessandogli che Irene è in realtà sua figlia.
Paco si lascia facilmente convincere, ma sua moglie Bea (Barbara Lennie) è convinta che la donna stia mentendo e sia coinvolta nel rapimento, messo in scena con lo scopo di spillare soldi al marito e vendicarsi di alcune vicende accadute in passato...
