Snowden, film drammatico co-scritto e diretto da Oliver Stone, racconta la storia di Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), abile informatico che una volta lavorava per la CIA, ritenuto poi responsabile della più grande fuoriuscita di informazioni segrete governative del ventunesimo secolo. Tutto ha inizio quando, a seguito di un infortunio, l'uomo è costretto a rinunciare alla sua carriera nelle forze speciali dell'esercito e per questo viene assunto da Corbin O'Brian (Rhys Ifans) alle dipendenze dei servizi segreti.
Nella centrale, nota come The Hill, dove viene addestrato, conosce il segreto che gli permetterà di difendersi in futuro per le sue azioni: il Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, ossia il modo di aggirare legalmente il Quarto Emendamento. Nel frattempo, grazie a un sito di incontri, fa conoscenza di Lindsay Mills (Shailene Woodley), una bellissima donna da cui è subito attratto. Sebbene abbiano principi e pensieri politici completamente opposti - lei progressista, lui patriottico - iniziano una relazione. Dopo una serie di missioni, durante le quali Snowden viene a conoscenza di fatti che lo scuotono, decide di lasciare la CIA. È da qui che comincia a rivelare ai giornalisti Glenn Greenwald (Zachary Quinto) ed Ewen MacAskill (Tom Wilkinson) e alla regista Laura Poitras (Melissa Leo), i segretissimi programmi di sorveglianza informatica del governo degli Stati Uniti…
