Drive è un film del 2011 diretto da Nicolas Winding Refn, basato sull’omonimo romanzo di James Sallis.
Per arrotondare lo stipendio di stuntman e meccanico, un formidabile pilota d’auto (Ryan Gosling) presta i sui servigi come autista per le rapine organizzate dal criminale Shannon (Bryan Cranston).
La vita adrenalinica ma monotona è improvvisamente interrotta dall’incontro con Irene (Carey Mulligan) e suo figlio Benicio, inquilini del palazzo. Nonostante la donna sia ancora emotivamente legata al marito carcerato Standard Gabriel (Oscar Isaac), non può nascondere l’attrazione per il pilota che, a sua volta, si invaghisce di lei.
L’inaspettata scarcerazione di Standard, tuttavia, rovina ogni prospettiva di rapporto, soprattutto quando il pilota viene a sapere che l’uomo deve dei soldi al malavitoso Nino (Ron Perlman), per la protezione avuta in carcere.
Avendo timore che i malviventi si possano vendicare su Irene, il pilota convince Standard a prendere parte ad una semplice rapina organizzata da Nino, così da ripagare il mafioso.
L’operazione, in cui viene coinvolta anche Blanche (Christina Hendricks), finisce nel sangue. Dopo essersi rifugiato in un hotel, il pilota scopre di essere venuto in possesso dei soldi di un mafioso di Philadelphia, che Nino e il complice Bernie (Alber Brooks) hanno intenzione di riciclare.
Vittima di un pericoloso raggiro, il pilota sa di essere il prossimo sulla lista dei malviventi, che non hanno intenzione di lasciare in vita alcun testimone. Dopo aver chiesto consiglio a Shannon, l’uomo tenta di patteggiare per la sicurezza di Irene e Benicio e i mafiosi accettano l’accordo. Sebbene l’unico desiderio del pilota sia quello di proteggere chi ama, la sua sola presenza potrebbe mettere in pericolo chiunque gli sia attorno…
