Hostiles, il film diretto da Scott Cooper, è ambientato nel 1892, l'epoca in cui negli Stati Uniti la rivoluzione industriale ha raggiunto il suo apice, i nativi americani sono stati progressivamente sconfitti e la leggendaria frontiera sta scomparendo lasciano velocemente il posto a nuovi insediamenti e città.
Il film racconta la storia di Joseph Blocker (Christian Bale), ex eroe di guerra e leggendario capitano di fanteria dell'esercito, diventato carceriere. Sulla soglia della pensione, riceve una richiesta direttamente dal presidente degli Stati Uniti: scortare il capo Cheyenne Falco Giallo (Wes Studi), malato terminale di cancro, e la sua famiglia, da un isolato avamposto in New Mexico fino al Montana, dove si trova la riserva della loro tribù. Nonostante la riluttanza iniziale - Blocker è convinto che il Capo debba morire in prigione - l'uomo viene costretto ad accettare per non rischiare di finire davanti alla corte marziale e perdere la pensione. Oltre alle vecchie ferite ancora aperte e ai pericoli del tragitto, ci sono altri due problemi da considerare. Il primo è che Blocker ha combattuto a lungo contro gli indiani e nel corso di questi scontri ha visto morire molti amici e commilitoni, alcuni proprio per mano di Falco Giallo.
Il secondo è l'incontro con la vedova Rosalie Quaid (Rosamund Pike), che ha assistito alla morte di tutti i suoi cari, massacrati da una banda di ladri di cavalli Comanche.
Per sopravvivere al viaggio di 1.000 miglia e sconfiggere le ostili tribù indiane, saranno tutti costretti a mettere da parte i dissapori e i pregiudizi, unendo le forze e scoprendo il valore della compassione e della tolleranza.
