Come un tuono, film drammatico diretto da Derek Cianfrance, vede protagonista Luke Glanton (Ryan Gosling), un brillante pilota di moto che fa lo stuntman in diversi spettacoli itineranti. La sua vita cambia radicalmente quando, mentre si sta esibendo a New York, viene a trovarlo Romina (Eva Mendes), una sua ex, e gli confessa che è il padre di suo figlio. L'uomo, che è cresciuto solo con la madre, sa bene cosa voglia dire non avere una figura maschile di riferimento e decide di lasciare il suo lavoro, così da rimanere in pianta stabile in città ed essere un papà presente.
La donna, tuttavia, che sta frequentando un tale di nome Kofi (Mahershala Ali), non è affatto convinta di volerlo coinvolgere nella quotidianità del bambino. Ma lui non demorde e trova lavoro nell'officina di Robin (Ben Mendelsohn). Il guadagno, però, è relativamente basso. L'unico modo per mettere insieme un bel po’ di soldi, a detta del nuovo datore di lavoro, è quello di fare una rapina in banca. Luke accetta e si offre di guidare la moto per scappare e nascondersi all'interno di un camion che lo aspetta poco più avanti.
Grazie al denaro, Romina sembra fidarsi di più del suo impegno come padre e gli consente di vedere il bambino più spesso. Tutto si complica quando l'uomo ha un'accesa discussione con Kofi che lo fa finire in galera…
