Nei quartieri generali della CIA ad Arlington Va. arriva l'analista Osborne Cox (John Malkovich) per un incontro top-secret. Sfortunatamente per Cox il segreto è presto svelato: è stato espulso. Cox non prende la notizia particolarmente bene e ritorna a casa, a Georgetown, per dedicarsi alle sue memorie e all'alcool, non necessariamente in quest'ordine. Abbattuta ma non particolarmente sorpresa è sua moglie Katie (Tilda Swinton) che sta pensando di lasciarlo per il suo amante Harry Pfarrer (George Clooney), un maresciallo federale a sua volta già sposato. Da qualche parte nella periferia di Washington D.C., in quello che sembra un mondo parallelo, l'impiegata presso l'Hardbodies Fitness Centers, Linda Litzk (Frances McDormand), riesce a malapena a concentrarsi sul lavoro e confida all'intraprendente collega Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt), il sogno della sua vita: rifarsi tutta con un intervento di chirurgia estetica. Sebbene Linda sappia benissimo che Ted Treffon (Richard Jenkins), il responsabile della palestra, è innamorato di lei si organizza tramite internet incontri con altri uomini. Un dischetto con le memorie dell'analista della CIA cade accidentalmente nelle mani di Linda e Chad e i due decidono di sfruttare l'occasione. Quando Ted comincia a preoccuparsi perché "nulla di buono può venirne fuori" gli eventi sfuggono al controllo di tutto e di tutti in una serie di incontri paurosamente divertenti.
