This Must Be the Place, film diretto da Paolo Sorrentino, racconta la storia di Cheyenne (Sean Penn), una rock star molto in auge negli anni ’80, a capo della band The Fellows. Sceso dal palcoscenico ormai da tempo, l’uomo continua a vestirsi e truccarsi proprio come quando era famoso. Trascorre le sue giornate nella sua grande villa di Dublino insieme alla moglie Jane (Frances McDormand) e all'amica Mary (Eve Hewson), sempre attento ai suoi investimenti in borsa.
Nonostante i numerosi tentativi da parte dei fan e della sua consorte di spingerlo di nuovo a fare musica, l’uomo si sente profondamente depresso e non ha alcuna intenzione di tornare a suonare. La sua carica autodistruttiva lo porta addirittura a definirsi una comune popstar. Tutto cambia quando viene a sapere che suo padre, con cui non parla da quasi trent’anni, sta per morire. Così Cheyenne è costretto a recarsi a New York, ma quando arriva in città scopre che il suo vecchio è già morto. Tra le sue carte viene a conoscenza che l’uomo stava facendo una ricerca su Aloise Lange (Heinz Lieven), ufficiale nazista che lo aveva ridicolizzato durante la seconda guerra mondiale in un campo di concentramento. È allora che l’ex rockstar decide di proseguire le indagini del padre, cominciando un intenso viaggio negli Stati Uniti, durante il quale farà numerosi incontri che cambieranno per sempre il suo modo di affrontare la vita…
