Les Misérables, è un film del 2012 diretto da Tom Hooper, basato sull'omonimo musical tratto dal celebre romanzo di Victor Hugo.
Francia, 1815: il prigioniero numero 24601, il cui vero nome è Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), viene rilasciato dall'integerrima guardia carceraria Javert (Russell Crowe), dopo una condanna di diciannove anni ai lavori forzati solo per aver rubato un pezzo di pane per sfamare il figlio malato della sorella. Una volta libero, Valjean trova ospitalità nel monastero del Monsignor Myriel (Colm Wilkinson) a cui, nonostante la sua gentilezza, non tarderà a rubargli l'argenteria, senza riuscire però a farla franca; ma di fronte alla polizia il vescovo finge di aver consegnato lui stesso l'argenteria a Valjean, facendolo rilasciare dopo avergli donato anche altri oggetti preziosi. Convertito al bene da questo atto caritatevole, Valjean a quel punto prenderà coscienza dei suoi peccati decidendo di costruirsi una nuova identità e di diventare un uomo migliore, assumendo il nome di Monsieur Madeleine.
Trascorsi 8 anni, il Signor Madeleine è un sindaco e imprenditore arricchito: una delle operaie che lavora nella sua fabbrica, Fantine (Anne Hathaway), viene licenziata solo perché madre di una bambina pur non essendo sposata. Cosette, sua figlia, vive con la coppia di malvagi locandieri Thénardier (Helena Bonham Carter e Sacha Baron Cohen): per pagarne le spese, Fantine arriverà a prostituirsi fino a che non si ammala gravemente e così Valjean prende a cuore le sorti della bimba, diventandone padre in seguito alla morte della giovane donna.
Gli anni passano e Cosette (Amanda Seyfried) cresce felice, ignara del suo passato e dei segreti del suo genitore adottivo, sulle cui tracce è tornato Javert dopo aver smascherato la falsa identità di Valjean. Mentre a Parigi la Rivoluzione insorge, la loro vita si alternerà tra intense passioni e amori non corrisposti, tra ribellione e lotta per la giustizia.
