Sound of Metal, film diretto da Darius Marder, racconta la storia del batterista Ruben (Riz Ahmed), che suona in un duo musicale punk-metal, i Blackgammon, insieme alla cantante, la sua ragazza Lou (Olivia Cooke). Il giovane ha vissuto diversi momenti bui, come il periodo della tossicodipendenza. Ormai pulito da quattro anni, Ruben sembra essere tornato in forma, fino a quando durante alcune performance non si accorge di avere problemi di udito. Dopo una visita da uno specialista, il batterista viene informato che questi episodi di abbassamento dell'udito si faranno sempre più frequenti e che la sua condizione è destinata a peggiorare con gli anni. La notizia getta Ruben in pieno sconforto, dato che senza udito la sua carriera da batterista non può continuare.
Preoccupata che il fidanzato possa ricadere nella trappola della dipendenza da eroina, Lou decide di aiutarlo e lo convince a rivolgersi a una comunità di non udenti, dove Ruben viene accettato ben volentieri. Qui il batterista dovrà fare i conti con la sua situazione e cercare di trovare un proprio equilibrio interiore.
