Nel 2019 il fragile sistema climatico che governa il pianeta Terra è controllato da un impianto satellitare globale, Dutch Boy, che ha permesso l’eliminazione di disastrose tempeste e della siccità nel mondo.
Jake Lawson (Gerard Butler), inizialmente responsabile del progetto, viene estromesso a causa della sua irriverenza al Senato e il fratello Max (Jim Sturgess) prende il suo posto.
Tre anni dopo, in Afghanistan si verifica un episodio climatico sconcertante. Lawson si mostra molto preoccupato e chiede al Presidente degli Stati Uniti di disporre una missione nello spazio per cercare l’eventuale avaria che sta compromettendo le capacità di Dutch Boy.
Il Presidente accetta di inviare Jake sulla stazione satellitare capitanata da Ute Fassbider (Alexandra Maria Lara), mentre ad Hong Kong si verifica un’altra catastrofe climatica.
Il rappresentante cinese Cheng Long (Daniel Wu) si mette in contatto con Max per comunicargli l’accaduto, sostenendo che si stia per verificare un geostorm. Per scongiurare la prospettiva apocalittica, Long raggiunge Max in America poiché ipotizza che qualcuno stia cercando di manomettere Dutch Boy senza destare sospetti.
Nel frattempo, Max informa Jake del complotto che sta cercando di smascherare con il collega cinese. I fratelli Lawson ingaggeranno una lotta contro il tempo per salvare il pianeta Terra e la popolazione mondiale…
