Edward e Alphonse Elric sono due giovani fratelli che vivono nel paese di Amestris. Il loro padre, Van Hohenheim, ha lasciato la casa quando erano ancora piccoli, mentre alcuni anni più tardi la loro madre, Trisha Elric, muore in seguito ad una malattia, lasciando i due orfani. I fratelli tentano allora di riportarla in vita tramite l'alchimia, ma la trasmutazione non procede come previsto e Edward perde la gamba sinistra mentre Alphonse l'intero corpo. Nel tentativo di riportare l'anima di Alphonse nel mondo umano, Edward sacrifica il suo braccio destro per legare l'anima del fratello a un'armatura, facendosi poi rimpiazzare gli arti perduti con delle protesi meccaniche chiamate automail.
