Un potentissimo virus simile a quello dell'influenza creato in laboratorio e scappato al controllo dell'esercito si espande un bel giorno nell'aria estiva di una piccola cittadina del Maine. Non c'è una cura per questo virus e sembra che l'umanità sia sul punto di estinguersi. Ma un piccolo gruppo di persone risulta immune al virus. Il primo a dare segni di sopravvivenza è Stu, un texano, che sente il richiamo di un'anziana veggente di colore, Abigail Freemantle, detta Mother Abigail. Durante il suo cammino verso la casa di Mother Abigail, Stu incontrerà altri sopravvissuti che, come lui, hanno sentito il richiamo della veggente e vanno da lei per capire il significato del messaggio. Insieme, i sopravvissuti si uniranno per sconfiggere le forze del male guidate da Randall Flagg, un'incarnazione del Diavolo.
On June 13, at a top-secret government laboratory in rural California, a weaponized version of influenza, called Project Blue, is accidentally released. A U.S. Army soldier, Charlie Campion, escapes the lab and travels across the country, unintentionally spreading the virus. On June 17, Campion crashes his car into a gas station in Arnette, Texas where Stu Redman and some friends are gathered. As Campion dies, he warns Redman that he had been pursued by a "Dark Man". The next day, the U.S. military arrives to quarantine the town.
The townspeople are taken to a CDC facility in Vermont. All but Stu succumb to the superflu, which kills 99.4% of the world's population in two weeks. The scattered survivors include would-be rock star Larry Underwood, deaf mute Nick Andros, Frannie Goldsmith and her unborn child, her teenaged neighbor Harold Lauder, imprisoned criminal Lloyd Henreid, and "Trashcan Man", a mentally ill arsonist and scavenger. The survivors begin having visions, either from kindly Mother Abagail or from the demonic Randall Flagg. The dreams counsel the survivors to either travel to Nebraska to meet Abagail, or to Las Vegas to join Flagg.
