Ethan Hawke è il co-ideatore e protagonista di The Good Lord Bird, miniserie d'ambientazione storica incentrata sull'abolizionista del 19° secolo John Brown così come lo ha raccontato James McBride nel romanzo omonimo del 2013. Scritto con Mark Richard, il drama, ambientato in Kansas durante il periodo in cui l'America era un campo di battaglia tra le forze a favore e contro la schiavitù, è racconto dal punto di vista di Onion (Joshua Caleb Johnson, Animal Kingdom), un personaggio di finzione che entra a far parte dell'eterogenea armata di soldati abolizionisti di Brown, partecipando infine al famoso raid del 1959 a un arsenale dell'esercito statunitense nella cittadina di Harper's Ferry. Sebbene l'incursione non riuscì a scatenare una rivolta degli schiavi come egli sperava, le sue azioni furono uno dei principali eventi catalizzatori della Guerra Civile. Un ritratto anche umoristico di quell'America, The Good Lord Bird mette in luce le complicate dinamiche riguardanti il razzismo e la religione che compongono l'identità americana. Nel cast anche Daveed Diggs (Snowpiercer) nel ruolo dello schiavo diventato leader abolizionista Frederick Douglass e Wyatt Russell (Lodge 49) dell'ufficiale e nemesi di Brow, Jeb Stuart. Si aggiungono Maya Hawke (figlia di Ethan e star di Stranger Things), Ellar Coltrane (Boyhood), Steve Zahn (Treme), Orlando Jones (American Gods) e Rafael Casal (Blindspotting).
