Al centro delle vicende della fiction c’è Valerio. Si tratta di un ex poliziotto romano ormai da anni lontano dal mondo delle forze dell’ordine: a suo tempo è stato espulso in circostanze mai chiarite e del tutto disilluso nei confronti della vita. Ormai è lontano da quel mondo: si è reinventato come benzinaio in una piccola città del centro Italia. È lì che cerca di ripartire da zero, lasciandosi alle spalle il suo intero passato.
La vita, però, non accetta questa sua presa di posizione. Il suo intuito da ex-poliziotto è essenziale nel momento in cui è chiamato a indagare su un caso che un genitore non dovrebbe mai trovarsi a affrontare. Quando suo figlio Ettore, a soli ventitrè anni, viene ritrovato senza vita sulle sponde del Tevere, la Polizia etichetta quanto successo come suicidio. Eppure qualcosa non torna sulla scomparsa del ragazzo, pur essendo da sempre ribelle e incline a non rispettare le regole in nome delle sue idee.
