Anni '70. Carson Philipps è un investigatore privato intento a scappare da alcuni scagnozzi di Los Angeles, dopo aver strappato Violet, figlia del boss locale, dalle grinfie del padre e averla aiutata a scappare. Per sfuggire da chi lo vorrebbe morto, accetta un caso lontano da Los Angeles, imbattendosi in un losco giro di scommesse clandestine che coinvolge il mondo del football, l'ambiguo dottor Mitchell e Doc, un potente boss della zona. Le cose si complicano quando il quarterback della squadra locale, idolo della città, muore in campo durante una partita e la principale sospettata diventa Becky, la giovane moglie. Becky è anche la figlia di Jayne, la donna che Carson ha sempre amato e che aveva abbandonato vent'anni prima. Carson scopre ben presto che Becky è anche sua figlia. Così inizia per lui l'indagine più importante della sua vita, volta a fare cadere le accuse su Becky. E avrà contro tutti, da Doc, al dottor Mitchell, i piccoli delinquenti locali e la stessa polizia. Per non parlare degli scagnozzi di Los Angeles che non hanno dimenticato lo sgarro subito. Ma, nonostante questo, Carson farà di tutto per proteggere Becky e la stessa Jayne.
