American History X è un film drammatico del 1998 diretto da Tony Kaye, con Edward Norton, Edward Furlong e Elliott Gould.
Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton) vive con la sua famiglia (la madre, due sorelle e il fratello minore Danny - Edward Furlong), dopo che suo padre, un pompiere dalle idee razziste, è morto a causa di uno spacciatore afroamericano, durante un incendio in quartiere nero.
Derek è un naziskin e appartiene al gruppo Skin88, a capo del quale c'è il proprietario di una casa editrice, Cameron Alexander (Stacy Keach), che promuove libri e musica di stampo nazista ed è il suo mentore.
Un giorno Derek uccide due ragazzi di colore che tentano di rubargli la macchina, e per questo finisce in carcere, dove entra subito nel gruppo dei neonazisti. Quando però si accorge della loro collaborazione con il gruppo ispanico per il traffico di droga, cerca di allontanarsi e per questo subisce la loro violenza. Inaspettatamente stringe amicizia con un detenuto di colore, con cui lavora nella lavanderia della prigione, e si avvicina anche al preside Sweenie (Avery Brooks), anch'egli di colore, che lo informa di come Danny stia percorrendo i suoi passi all'interno del gruppo neonazista; all'assegnazione di una tesina da parte del professore di storia Murray (Elliott Gould), che è ebreo, Danny ha portato un elaborato di elogio al Mein Kampf.
