Plot: Il marinaio irlandese Michael O'Hara (Welles) incontra la bella bionda Elsa (Rita Hayworth) mentre porta un calesse a Central Park. Tre teppisti tendono un agguato al calesse. Michael salva Elsa e la accompagna a casa. Michael le rivela di essere un marinaio e apprende che Elsa e suo marito, l'avvocato difensore parzialmente disabile, ma ricco e famoso, e molto più vecchio di lei, Arthur Bannister (Sloane), sono appena arrivati a New York da Shanghai.
