Zak ha solo 22 anni ma vive in una casa di cura per anziani in North Carolina, a cui è stato assegnato dallo stato perché senza famiglia e affetto dalla sindrome di Down. Zak però non ci sta, ed è determinato a scappare dalle cure di Eleanor, responsabile dell'istituto, con l'aiuto dell'amico Carl. Quando finalmente il ragazzo riesce a darsi alla fuga, il destino lo mette sul cammino di Tyler, pescatore di granchi inseguito da un compratore a cui deve dei soldi. Brusco e tormentato, Tyler si prende però cura di Zak e decide di portarlo con sé nel suo viaggio verso la Florida, facendo tappa alla scuola di wrestling dove Zak spera di incontrare il suo idolo Salt Water Redneck.
