Lo sfondo: una metropoli statunitense, di notte, con le sue luci multicolori, le sue strade. I personaggi principali: 4 ragazzi diciassettenni con una partner ciascuno. Tutto negli anni sessanta. John Miller è il più affascinante, il più ambito dalle ragazze. Nessuno lo batte quando è alla guida della sua auto. Di fatto si imbarca con Carrol, dodicenne, bruttina, capricciosa, che pretende già di essere sexy e di fare soffrire i maschi. Egli un po' la insulta e un po' la protegge. Terry Fields è il più disgraziato ed infantile. Si vanta di una macchina immensa, che, in realtà, ha avuto in prestito. Si guadagna, come compagna occasionale, l'affascinante Herby. Mentre i due però sono appartati in un prato, dei loschi figuri rubano loro la macchina.
