Primo Atto
La famiglia Nuvolone, composta da Leo, Tecla e i due figli Clemente e Sisto, si sveglia di buonora per partecipare ad un importante raduno nazionale di boy scout. L’atmosfera serena della giornata viene bruscamente interrotta dalla morte improvvisa dell’anziana madre di Leo che vive con loro. Dopo aver chiamato il medico, che constata l’avvenuto decesso, Leo e Tecla devono occuparsi del funerale, dalla scelta della bara alla sepoltura, ma un impresario di pompe funebri sbucato dal nulla fa precipitare la famiglia Nuvolone in una sorta di incubo surreale. Dopo la cerimonia funebre in chiesa, la povera bara e la famiglia...
Secondo Atto
Callisto Cagnato, grande e temuto professore universitario di Storia dell’Arte, ha un figlio, Severiano, che studia pianoforte al Conservatorio. Il carattere dispotico e severo di Callisto ha reso il figlio profondamente insicuro e timido. Callisto si rende conto che Severiano, ormai ventenne, non ha molti rapporti con l’esterno, tanto meno con le ragazze. Durante un esame universitario, rimane favorevolmente impressionato da Lucilla, una ragazza intelligente ma dai modi modesti ed educati. La invita a casa per farla conoscere al figlio. Inaspettatamente fra i due ragazzi nasce un sentimento piuttosto forte. Entrambi si sentono vittime delle circostanze della vita: Severiano per avere un padre così severo ed accentratore e Lucilla perché orfana di genitori e cresciuta fra le suore dove tuttora vive...
Terzo Atto
Moreno Vecchiarutti e sua moglie Enza, con il figlio quattordicenne Steven, sono in partenza per una vacanza a Taormina nell’albergo più prestigioso della località. Fra Moreno e Enza c’è il classico momento di stanchezza e di mancanza di desiderio aggravato da un figlio che sembra interessarsi solo al calcio. Non hanno problemi economici, anzi la loro attività di gestori di vari negozi di telefonia li ha resi piuttosto “benestanti”. Su consiglio dello psicologo che segue il figlio Steven, decidono di “ritrovarsi” compiendo una vacanza tutti e tre insieme, ma scelgono la località sbagliata e l’hotel sbagliato...
