La piccola Sally Matthews di appena cinque anni - rimasta psicologicamente scossa in maniera traumatica dalla morte del padre, precipitato da un'impalcatura mentre con la moglie attendeva al restauro di antiche rovine Maya - soffre di una grave forma di autismo. Non parla, non comunica, non risponde e rimane a tratti assorta in una specie di sonnambulismo pericoloso, che la porta ad arrampicarsi sugli alberi e a camminare sui tetti e lungo le grondaie in terrificanti prove di equilibrio. Tuttavia la madre, Ruth, è estremamente riluttante a riconoscere le anomalie della bimba e ad affidarla alle cure di uno psichiatra. Ma quando a scuola Sally, salita su un albero causa involontariamente una ferita a un coetaneo che cercava di seguirla, il preside convoca Jacob T. Beerlander, uno specialista di psichiatria infantile, per risolvere il problema. La madre è infuriata per quell'intrusione di estranei nella vita della bambina, che lei continua a ritenere "normale" e solo bisognosa di quella più assidua presenza e attenzione che la sua professione di restauratrice non le consente.
