In an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity-including murder-becomes legal. The police can't be called. Hospitals suspend help. It's one night when the citizenry regulates itself without thought of punishment. On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become when a stranger comes knocking. When an intruder breaks into James Sandin's (Ethan Hawke) gated community during the yearly lockdown, he begins a sequence of events that threatens to tear a family apart. Now, it is up to James, his wife, Mary (Lena Headey), and their kids to make it through the night without turning into the monsters from whom they hide.
Stati Uniti, 2022. La situazione socio-economica è ottimale, con un indice di disoccupazione ai minimi storici e una criminalità quasi azzerata. C'è però un prezzo da pagare per questa pace sociale: una notte all'anno è lasciato libero sfogo agli istinti violenti e tutto è permesso, qualunque crimine. Perciò, quelli che possono si asserragliano dentro case perfettamente protette ed equipaggiate, aspettando che passi. James Sandin si occupa di sistemi di sicurezza ed è al top di una categoria molto richiesta, in particolare in previsione di quella notte. Come gli altri anni, intende passare al sicuro la nottata con la famiglia, dopo aver messo in sicurezza i suoi clienti. Tutto è perfetto come al solito, ma Henry, il fidanzato della figlia diciottenne Zoey, resta di nascosto nella casa per incontrarsi con lei e parlare con James, che non vede di buon occhio la loro relazione. Inoltre, Charlie, il figlio piccolo, vede, dai monitor di controllo, un uomo di colore che chiede disperatamente aiuto poco fuori casa. È braccato e vuole un posto in cui nascondersi. Senza pensarci due volte, Charlie disattiva il sistema d'allarme e lo fa entrare. Due elementi di disturbo che sconvolgono la sicurezza del fortino della famiglia Sandin. Una delle conseguenze è che un gruppo di persone armate di tutto punto chiede la restituzione della sua vittima sacrificale altrimenti sarà la guerra. È solo l'inizio dei guai e la notte è ancora lunga.
